What can I expect in a counseling session?
Your first therapy session will generally last 60-90 minutes. I will ask you questions about your areas of concern, as well as your life history, goals, and stregnths. We will determine if there is a good fit between us for ongoing therapy sessions. I use a colaborative, strength-based approach that usually results in clients feeling better and more hopeful by end of the first session.
Between sessions, clients are encouraged to think about and process what was discussed. At times, you may be asked to do something specific outside of the therapy sessions, such as reading a relevant book or keeping track of feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. For the therapy to "work," you must be an active participant, both during and between the therapy sessions. After the first session, sessions are generally 50 minutes long. Some clients prefer longer extended sessions, which we can be arranged to suit your individual needs.
What benefits can I expect from working with a counselor?
A number of benefits are available from participating in therapy. Often it is helpful to know that someone understands your life situation. Counseling can provide a fresh perspective on a difficult problem or point you in the direction of a solution. You can expect to gain clarification about your feelings and the issues that led you to therapy. You will have more support to help you manage the problems at hand.
Do you accept insurance?
There is a confusing array of insurance arrangements. The first thing you should do is check with your insurance carrier. Check your coverage carefully. Do you have mental health benefits? How many sessions per calendar year does your plan cover? What is your deductible?
